Ocean Inn Motel

After a last minute decision to attend a symposium on the North Shore of Auckland, we dived in to find some accommodation close to AUT in Northcote.

Luck would have it, we obtained the last room of The Ocean Inn Motel in Northcote, given that this was Queens Birthday Weekend getting something on such short notice was lucky.

Initially we had not intended on arriving until very late on Friday night around 10:30pm and the motel was more than happy to accommodate us in such a late arrival. As it turned out we managed to get there a little after 8:30pm. Check in was a breeze and hassle free though our original room number had changed, no issue there.

When we travel, we tend to do our own cooking etc so usually end up with a family suite in order to get good cooking facilities. The Ocean Inn Motel had listed their family units with “Full cooking facilities” well, this was a 2 ring hob, a microwave and an electric frying pan. In the past Full cooking facilities in other motels has meant an oven and not just the microwave variety, seems not here. That was a bit of a let down but no show stopper.

Plenty of cups, glasses, plates, cutlery, pots and pans etc. A heap of bench space and a breakfast bar. Although only 3 bar stools, the room could sleep 2 adults and 3 children.

A let down was the lack of seating, no couch or seats per say, just beds to sit on, not overly comfortable to sit and watch the ample Sky TV Channels, however for eating and sleeping which is the intent, what more to you need.

Water pressure in the shower was good, although the mixer tap was very temperamental between just right and stone cold or way too hot.

My only real concerns which were raised with the owner, 1) a wooden chopping board had obviously been put away wet as it was growing with mould and 2) an evantair heater which had a damaged back and broken surrounds, while for most this may not be a concern, knowing ASNZ Electrical Standards I know this would have failed any electrical inspection had one been carried out.

We were assured by the owner that both the issues above would be removed and dealt with, we can only hope that was the case.

Over all, we were very pleased with the room and our stay was pleasant. We slept very well over night and awoke well rested. People walking around on the upstairs walkway was a little noisy but overall room to room noise was not an issue.

We will be more than happy to stay at the Ocean Inn Motel again.
