Travelodge Wellington

Needing to travel down to Wellington for the weekend, we booked to stay at the Travelodge Wellington on Gilmer Terrace.

The online reservation processes was painless and quick, check in was also painless and fast with friendly staff on the front desk.

First impressions, upon entering the hotel were good, car park was a little tight for our Mitsubishi Delica but it did fit snug enough in the car park. The hotel charge $20 per night for a parking and space is at a premium, on a first come first served basis so you need to get in early to secure a park.

The room we were allocated, while small was more than adequate for the purpose it is intended. Being on the 16th floor, we had a bit of a view of the Harbour but mostly roof tops and apartments across from our window. The room included a microwave, kettle and mini fridge. Plates, cups, glasses and cutlery were provided. But the lack of a tea towel and dish detergent meant simply rinsing the dishes in the ensuite sink and using a hand towel to dry them which we had bought with us.A king size superior bed provided a good night sleep and was comfortable. There is also a safe with in the room on the floor of the wardrobe along with a hair dryer, iron and ironing board.The ensuite bathroom was more than big enough and most importantly clean. The water pressure on the shower was good, but could have been better. There are no lack of mirrors, with a wall mirror over the vanity in the ensuite and a full length mirror in the main room area.

Along with the complementary Tea, sugar, coffee & milk provided, there is also a mini bar which included beer, cans of fizzy drink an energy drink and bottled water as well as peanuts, chocolate bars and chippies. All at highly inflated prices, given what you’d expect to pay at a supermarket but on par with any hotel. I could never justify spending $4.00 on 60grams of salted peanuts or even $9.00 for a bottle of Steinlarger Pure beer. As long as you’re prepared for a brisk walk, there is a super market (New World) around 10 minutes’ walk away at the Wellington Train Station.

Housekeeping staff appear to do their rounds at around 11:00am, though I suspect the times will vary depending on the floor you are staying on. Housekeeping staff were friendly and efficient.

We were informed on Friday evening that due to a private function, the restaurant would be closed on Saturday night but the hotel was dropping the service charge from room service for the night. There are plenty of restaurants around the area to choose from, so there are no shortages of offsite eating establishments to choose from.

The noise levels throughout the day mainly consisted of the lifts as they ascended and descended the levels of the hotel at high speed and regular intervals, although 16 levels up sirens from fire engines and police cars echoed around the buildings and were quite loud with in the room, this was a once off occasion.

Night noise again mainly consisted of lifts and doors in the corridor, however we could hear yelling and screaming from the road below, again this was isolated and not a constant noise to be annoying. More noise was heard from outside sources and lifts than from people with in other rooms. People talking in the corridor could be heard talking but the level was not high.

Sunday morning 10-06-2012 @ 6:30am we were awoken by a fire alarm going off. Exiting the building via the stairs we ended up on an external metal grate stair case from level 10 which had no lighting at all. After standing around outside for roughly 3 quarters of an hour, a fireman said we were able to re-enter the building. At no time during this time did I see a staff member. Once back into the building it appeared that all the staff were hiding out the back of the reception area, while guests were waiting to try and get secondary keys as they had forgotten to pick their key up when leaving the room.

3 Hours later and I still have heard nothing from any staff member. While the fire crews did a wonderful job, it appears there was no fire. However some comment to guests from the Travelodge staff would not have gone astray. Though I assume there was a skeletal staff on at the time.

As it turned out, it appears that the fire alarm was deliberately activated, as there were a number of commercial buildings in central Wellington that required a fire brigade presence between 6:30am and 10:30am and a person was seen running from the Dominion Post building after the second incident at the location.

Overall, the hotel felt comfortable and staff seemed friendly, the room we had was more than adequate for what we required if some basic items were lacking as far as rinsing / cleaning dishes was concerned. Although these items missing, would not sway my decision to stay here again. The room offers exactly what you need to have a bite to eat, something to drink, shower, get ready to go out and of course sleep at the end of a busy day
